How to Heal Trauma?

Have you ever thought that the stories and events we recount most of the time focus on what went wrong in the past?

It is easy to remember things we haven't achieved or somehow lost in the past, be it an accident during a school trip, the pain of losing a loved one, or abandoning a career because you were not able to deposit a fee in time due to your financial crisis. Bad events take time to wear off.

According to Clifford Nass, a professor of communication at Stanford University, “Some people do have a more positive outlook, but almost everyone remembers negative things more strongly and in more detail.”

But how do you keep your past from ruining your future? Well, the first step toward finding a solution is to identify the root cause of the problem.

Things From Your Past That are Ruining Your Future

Traumatic Experiences

Traumatic life experiences are the primary cause of negative change. There are different definitions of trauma, but if you carefully look at them,  they all tend to focus on an experience that influences a person's sanity (mental and physical health and wellbeing). That can include abuse or neglect at the workplace, abandonment by friends and family, death or loss of a loved one, accidents, all types of domestic abuse, and much more.

Violation of Trust

If you have a past where your trust was violated by someone you truly loved or believed, then chances are you'll take those experiences with you when you move forward. When we're hurt, the first thing we do is draw boundaries so that no one else could enter our comfort zone and hurt us again. As a result, we become isolated and feel fearful in making new friends and socialize.

Failures and Regrets

Did you know a history of past failures can feed stress, anxiety, and above all, low self-esteem? You lose confidence and keep yourself away from looking for new experiences.

But nobody can have success unless they try, fail, and retry.

Similarly, stressing too much about your failures and flaws in the past may adversely impact your future success.

How Can Psychotherapy Help You Grow Out of Your Past Negative Experiences?

Paving the Way to the Prosperous Future...

Part of what is involved in healing is a 3-step clarity process (you may also check out this video to know more about how it works). If you take that process out, it comes down to experiences of hurt, including pain, loss, regret, and neglect.

All of these emotions are an outcome of your innate body’s and mind’s response to what happened at that time. Although we cannot change the past, I can help you improve your relationship with different experiences from the past. So you can be freed up from them. They don’t have the same control over you as they now may. So you can enjoy a more happy and prosperous connected life today. That really is the process of going back, looking at how those instances impacted you and devising a strategy that can help you grow out of those experiences.

I cannot help you change your past, but I can certainly help you change your relationship with the past so you can have a better present and a prosperous future.
